SUPERSONIC HEARING

My little sister is such a drama queen. Literally. Jade is an actress on Broadway.
She clapped her hands together, applauding the students who’d just bravely put themselves out there to try out for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. “You all did such a great job today! Tomorrow we cast the roles and start our first rehearsal. This is gonna be epic!”
Jade had come out to the Bay Area to visit our family for the week and offered to volunteer at the youth center where I worked. Since there wasn’t enough time to produce an entire play, Jade decided to direct the kids in one key scene from the musical that would be performed later in the week.
I loved my job as director of the arts at the Mission Youth Center. It was just about the only thing going right in my life. The only downside was the fact that these walls were haunted by memories of my ex, Elec, who used to be a youth counselor here. That was how we met. He’d loved his job, too, until he quit so that he could move to New York after we broke up. He moved to be with her. I shook my head to shoo away thoughts of him and Greta.
Jade grabbed her purse. “I need to go back to your place to use the bathroom and have a quick bite.”
I’d just moved into a new apartment that was only a few blocks away from my job. The lease had finally run out on the place I’d been renting with Elec across town. Even though my ex sent me his half of the rent for the remainder of our lease after he’d moved out, I couldn’t wait to vacate that place; every corner of it reminded me of him and of the miserable months that followed our break up.
My place was right in the south central section of the Mission District. I loved the culture in my new neighborhood. Produce bins and a variety of cafes lined the streets. It was also a mecca for Latin culture, which was great, except for the fact that it reminded me of Elec, who was half Ecuadorian. Little reminders of the guy who broke my heart were everywhere.
Jade and I strolled down the sidewalk, stopping at a fruit stand so that she could buy some papayas for an afternoon smoothie she planned to make back at my apartment. We also ended up getting two coffees to go.
I bent back the opening on my coffee lid as we walked. “So, little sis, I never thought we would be in the same predicament at the same time.”
Jade had recently been dumped by her musician boyfriend.
“Yes. But the difference is, I feel like I have way more distractions in my life than you do. It’s not that I don’t think about Justin. It’s not that I don’t get sad, but my performances keep me so busy that it’s almost like I don’t have time to wallow in it, you know?”
“I told you I’ve been doing these phone therapy sessions, right?”
Jade took a sip then shook her head. “No.”
“Yeah. I found this psychologist who specializes in trauma from failed relationships, but she’s in Canada. Anyway, we do phone sessions one night a week.”
“Is it helping?”
“It always helps to talk things out.”
“Yeah. But no offense, you don’t seem any better for it. Anyway, you can talk things out with Claire or me. You don’t need to pay big bucks to talk to a stranger.”
“Nighttime is really my only time to talk to anyone. You’re performing at night, and Claire is too wrapped up in being a blissful newlywed. Besides, she’s never had her heart broken. She listens, but she doesn’t get it.”
Our older sister, Claire, married her high school sweetheart. Even though the three of us were close growing up in nearby Sausalito, I’d always felt more comfortable opening up to Jade.
When we arrived at my building, my sister stopped to sit on one of the benches in the corner of the fenced-in courtyard. “Let’s sit for a bit, finish our coffees.” Her gaze wandered across the grass to my shirtless neighbor. “Okay…who’s the hottie in the beanie defacing the property?”
“What is it with you and beanies?”
“Justin used to wear one. That’s why I love them. Isn’t that sad?”
“That is sad.”
“This from the girl who still sleeps in her ex’s shirt.”
“It’s comfortable. It has nothing to do with Elec,” I lied. It was the one thing I allowed myself from him. It made me sad, but I wore it anyway.
“So…who is that guy?”
I didn’t know my neighbor’s name, but I’d see him once in a while doing spray paint art along the wrap-around concrete wall that surrounded the property. It served as a vast canvas. His spray painting was true art, definitely not what would be considered simple graffiti. It was an elaborate mix of celestial and geographical images. This guy just kept adding different artwork to the wall gradually. It was a work in progress. I could only assume he planned to paint the entire circumference of the property, as much as the wall space would allow.
“He lives in the building, next door to me, actually.”
“What is he doing? They allow him to do that here?”
“I don’t know. The first time I saw him out here, I thought he was vandalizing the property. But no one seems to care or stop him. Every day, he adds to the mural. It’s actually quite beautiful. But it doesn’t match his personality.”
Jade blew on her coffee. “What do you mean?”
“He’s not very nice.”
“You’ve talked to him?”
“No. He’s just not friendly. I’ve tried to make eye contact, but he walks right by me. He has these two big dogs, and they’re pretty mean. They bark all of the time. He walks them every morning.”
“Maybe he’s like a savant. You know, really good with art. Or maybe he’s a genius but with limited social skills. What do they call that…Asperger’s?”
“No. He communicates just fine. I’ve seen him yelling at a few people. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have that. This guy is just not friendly. He doesn’t have Asperger’s. He’s just an ass.
Jade chuckled. “I think you should totally stop by his place with some warm muffins wrapped up in a basket. It’s the neighborly thing to do. Maybe he’ll loosen up…or loosen you up.”
“Muffins, huh? What’s that code for?”
“Muff…muffins. Same thing. If I lived here, I’d be all over that. But I don’t live here. You do. And you totally need a distraction. I say…he’s it.”
I admired the guy’s broad shoulders and tanned muscular back as his arm moved the spray can up and down. “God, doesn’t he remind you of Elec, though? Arm tattoo…dark hair. Artistic. Basically, that’s the last type of guy I’m going for at this point.”
“So, if someone looks like or seems similar to Elec, then they’re automatically disqualified? They’re destined to do the same thing Elec did? Is that how you think? That’s just stupid rationale.”
“Maybe that’s fucked-up. But the last thing I want is to be with someone who reminds me of him in the least.”
“Well, that’s a shame, because Elec was freaking hot, and this guy…is even hotter.”
“Can you remind me why we’re discussing this? The dude doesn’t even say hello to me. He’s not signing up to be on this delusional version of The Bachelorette. He’s not interested.”
Neighbor Dearest suddenly wiped the sweat from his forehead, took off the mask covering his nose and mouth, and dumped the spray cans into a black drawstring sack. He slung it over his shoulder and just when I thought he was going to walk away and out of the courtyard, he began to walk in our direction. Jade straightened in her seat, and I hated that my pulse raced a bit.
His eyes were focused on me. I wouldn’t call it an angry stare, but he wasn’t smiling. The sunlight beamed directly into his blue eyes, which glowed and really stood out against his tan skin. Jade was right; this guy was truly gorgeous.
“Blueberry are my favorite,” he said.
“What?”
“Muffins.”
“Oh.”
Jade snorted but stayed silent, letting me take the brunt of this humiliation.
“And I’m not anti-social or a savant. I’m just a good old-fashioned prick…with supersonic hearing.”
He smirked and walked away before I could say anything.
When he was safely out of earshot—for real this time—Jade sighed. “Angry guys are the best in bed.”
“You just can’t stop yourself, can you? Haven’t you done enough damage? I’ve always told you that you’re loud when you think you’re whispering. Now there’s proof…at my expense.”
“You’ll be thanking me later when you’re screaming out in orgasm as the angry artist is Van Goh-ing down on you.”
“You’re crazy.”
“That’s why you love me.”
“It is.”

Blurb
A STANDALONE NOVEL that does NOT need to be read in conjunction with any other book.

From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward, comes a friends-to-lovers story with sexy new characters.

After getting dumped, the last thing I needed was to move next door to someone who reminded me of my ex-boyfriend, Elec.

Damien was a hotter version of my ex.

The neighbor I’d dubbed “Angry Artist” also had two massive dogs that kept me up with their barking.

He wanted nothing to do with me. Or so I thought until one night I heard laughter coming through an apparent hole in my bedroom wall.

Damien had been listening to all of my phone sessions with my therapist.

The sexy artist next door now knew all of my deepest secrets and insecurities.

We got to talking.

He set me straight with tips to get over my breakup.

He became a good friend, but Damien made it clear that he couldn’t be anything more.

Problem was, I was falling hard for him anyway. And as much as he pushed me away, I knew he felt the same…because his heartbeat didn’t lie.

I thought my heart had been broken by Elec, but it was alive and beating harder than ever for Damien.

I just hoped he wouldn’t shatter it for good.

Author's note – Neighbor Dearest is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

ARC: The Effects of Falling - Mariah Dietz (The Weight of Rain #2)

Published Date: August 2, 2016
Genre: Romance
Synopsis: I have loved my best friend for eleven years.
Eleven years of celebrations.
Eleven years of victories and losses.
Eleven years of inside jokes and shared smiles.
Eleven years of helping him raise his daughter as a single father.

He smiles at me and my world brightens.
He ignores me and I forget how to function.
He holds my hand and takes more of my heart.
He leaves and time stops.

We have both lost too much, but am I willing to risk the effects of falling again?

The Effects of Falling is definitely a book to read but only if you read the The Weight of Rain duet together. As for this girl, I felt confused even though this book was technically a stand-alone. I found myself in love with the characters because it didn't mainly focus on the sex and heated messes that often happen.

Though this book wasn't complete gibberish where you had to read the first book first so that was much appreciated. Did I fall in love with Kash and Summer along the way while I read this? Yeah, I did. Are they my favorite book couple? No but they are getting up there.

The plot line was all around hopeful because you wanted the best of the best for them especially after those eleven years.

You just have to jump right into the story if you do not want to read The Weight of Rain. But I definitely want to urge you all to read the duet.

They are both free on Kindle Unlimited and I have no regrets on signing up with that other than the 10 book limit.

With a 3.8 out of 5 stars, I will blog you later.

ARC: Hold Fast - Olivia Rigal and Shannon Macallan

Published Date: July 30, 2016
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Synopsis: One needs to be rescued.
The other needs to be saved.
Sean : When I was a SEAL, I lived my life by one motto: HOLD FAST.
Those two words kept me alive through years of war, but they couldn’t save all my brothers in arms, and they couldn’t save my career.
Now I’m home, back in the world, with more nightmares and scars than ten men should have, and the only woman who can make me whole again is missing.
I don’t care where she is or who has her. There is nothing I won’t do to find her and bring her home.
To me.

Courtney : I’m trapped, and there’s no way out. I need to escape this cult and leave this hell behind, but I can’t do it alone.
I knew the Church of the New Revelation was a bad idea when my mother brought me here, but I didn’t know how bad. I’m a prisoner, and this noose draws tighter around my neck every day.
There’s only one bright spot in my life, only one man who could save me. He’s the only man I’ve ever loved, but he left me behind when he enlisted all those years ago.

Sean, where are you?

This book was one of the quickest that I have read. I am not a big military romance person but this is something that captivated me from the start. As a stand-alone romance, this had me going because I knew that every little bit of information was going to be there. Every sexy bit. Every teeth clenching bit.

It brought me back to the ages of domineering men who don't know the meaning of no. I don't mean present times either.

Courtney is stuck within a cult because her mother is absolutely in love with the cult leader who in turn is obsessed with the fact that men should rule all and only male heirs will proceed forward. She needs to be rescued. But only one can save her.

Hold Fast is an absolutely thrilling book -- even if I am only 25% in because I just know as more details are released that I am going to love this book forever and ever.

I cannot wait for their reunion because that is always the best part to me.

With this review, I dub this book to be a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Blog you later, awesome book nerds.

Jonquils for Jax - Katy Regency (Rousseaus #1)

Jonquils for Jax, The Rousseaus #1 by Katy Regnery
Date of Publication: August 5, 2016

Blurb

Did you fall in love with The English Brothers? Were you hot for the Winslows? Katy Regnery's New York Times bestselling Blueberry Lane series continues with The Rousseau siblings in Summer 2016!

Jacqueline "Jax" Rousseau is vivacious, rich, smart and beautiful…but that doesn't mean she's lucky in love: she's dated doctors, lawyers, actors and politicians who've all managed to end up disappointing her. In fact, she's on a self-imposed hiatus from love when she has an unpleasant run-in with her neighbor's gorgeous new landscaper, Gardener Lenox. Jax is not accustomed to gruff, ill-mannered men that can't be charmed, but when he saves her skin, she realizes that something about Gard intrigues her...and if she can find her way through the armor that surrounds his heart, she might finally find a love that won't let her down.

THE ROUSSEAUS

Jonquils for Jax, The Rousseaus #1 - available 8.5.16
Marry Me Mad, The Rousseaus #2 - available 10.21.16
J.C. and the Bijoux Jolis, The Rousseaus #3 - available 11.29.16

Review: First off, please excuse my awful writing. On my end, I am writing this super late (at least to me) and I am tired. Fatigued from the day and dealing with people when I would rather be cuddling up with Gardener.

But again, when is my writing ever "good"?

Literally, his name is Gardener and he is a gardener.

Knee slapper. Tell me about it.

I know it shouldn't be as punny as it was. (Yes that was intentional). Even I got confused as Jax was in the book and even though it should have been straight from the get go, it wasn't. I definitely had a few error messages in my brain as I tried to process this. Multiple times.

Jonquils for Jax will absolutely grip you from the beginning as you fall in love with Jacqueline. She is absolutely snarky but all around a good hearted and good natured person that throws herself at the guy that will not let his guard down.

Really the synopsis tells you everything there is to know about this book but there were some things that I was not expecting. However, I did like these certain surprises and Katy Regnery is yet to disappoint.

This really is a book that you cannot put down because to me, it was a 4.2 out of 5 stars.

Blog you later, awesome book nerds.

ARC: Virgo - Livia Lang (Erotic Zodiac #4)

Published Date: July 29, 2016
Genre: Erotica
Synopsis: Vincent has been lusting after his best friend’s brat for a year. He knows it’s so wrong to want her, but Adelina’s untouched curves are agonizingly perfect. Struggling to keep himself in control, he tries to avoid thinking about how much he wants to claim both her body and heart as his own.

But dark desires can’t be kept secret forever.

When she is home alone one week, Vincent comes over to check on the innocent Adelina. Their sexual attraction soon reaches the bursting point, and Vincent gives in to his forbidden fantasies. He just doesn’t know if his lust will lead to happiness or ruin.

Warning: This dirty, dirty book is about an older man who falls for an innocent woman he knows is off-limits. But anything goes when it comes to love!

Livia Lang was a new author for me and this book... Well let's just leave it at the word of sexy.

Dirty and erotic, a huge age difference but all around a hopeful mood. You wanted these characters to get together regardless of the wrongness of the whole topic. I really have no words to say other than the fact that it was a decent book but not one that I would read again. But on the other note, it took me 10 minutes to read the whole book.

Whether it was to be a short book all around or if I thought it was a good book, everyone should read the fourth installment in the Zodiac series.

I still do not understand the meaning of titling the books this way but it was an interesting book.

ARC: An Irresistible Scent - Heather Farley

Published Date: July 25, 2016
Genre: Romance
Synopsis: Do men have pheromones? The answer is YES.

Eileen Klaris has a charmed life. At only 24 years young, she heads her very own online business selling handmade perfumes, and was to marry a wonderful man. Everything was smooth sailing, until her so-called fiancé tried to sell the company she poured her soul into.

Dreams were shattered like glass, an engagement was called off, and she ran away to New York City, where Eileen thought she could start a new chapter of her life, and rescue her stagnant business.

It was the perfect plan. Except that on the plane to New York, she took a seat next to the handsome Leon Stafford, the president of Stafford’s, the hottest place to shop in the entire country. His fiery eyes, majestically sculpted face, and warm presence drew her in, like a moth to a flame.

But, Eileen's cautious, damaged heart, and Leon's dark, hidden past, are just the beginning of the raging storm that strives to stop these two from embracing each another…

An Irresistible Scent is a rollercoaster of ups and downs, about finding love after heartbreak, weathering through the toughest of challenges and temptations. Discover what it means to put everything on the line, to protect the one you love.

This steamy little number is a standalone - no cliffhangers! But be advised, because this book is SPICY, with a happy ending for Leon and Eileen to round it all off.

Dark and hidden, Leon comes tumbling into Eilleen's life with his spicy body and scent and boy do sparks fly with their undeniable attraction. It was fate that put them together on the plane together and fate after that to push them together. Though there was the heartbreaking moment of feeling betrayed, this makes it all the better. I think this book was absolutely beautiful.

After the book ends, you know the portion of 'About the Author' and learned that this was her first self-published book, you can imagine that I was surprised. Majority of indie authors cannot appease my reading appetite.

Read this book and you will feel how tangible their love is because of their Irresistible Scents to each other.

With a 3.8 out of 5 stars, I will blog you later, awesome book nerds.

ARC: Island Kisses: A Billionaire Love Story - Krista Lakes

Published Date: July 20, 2016
Genre: Romance
Synopsis: After hundreds of catastrophic dates, she never expected to find love.

Harper Thomas loves bad dates. She goes on hundreds of them a year, and then blogs about them online to make her living. When her sister signs her up for a new dating service, Harper's not expecting to find anything other than more ridiculous men. She certainly isn't planning to meet him...

Gabe Honors is one of the billionaire owners of Kindling Dating. He also happens to be Miami's most eligible bachelor, but his search for love has never been successful. That is, until he decided to use his own dating service. The first time he meets Harper, he knew that she was the one. However, in order to make sure that it really was love, he kept his identity a secret. He soon finds out, secrets never mix well with love...

Can a billionaire CEO finally stump this bad-date-blogger? Can Harper look past the money and find the man? Or will they only be left with memories of their island kisses?

Island Kisses is the ninth book in a series of standalone billionaire romances. If you like sweet stories on the beach, then you'll love this story of a regular girl and a handsome stranger falling in love.

This was the first time that I read Krista Lakes but I can guarantee you that this will not be the last.

With the main character, Harper: You fall in love with her witty manner because she takes her bad dates so ironically well. She also makes a little living off of it. She allows other people who follow her blog to follow her bad dates vicariously. But as said, when she meets the one guy that changed her whole perspective on chummy, bad dates kind of guy.

Comedic and sweet, all around funny. You just kind of have to follow in love with the characters and the story because truly if there is a romance that is to be made like that from a site like this, I would most definitely use that.

A short and sweet review is the best that I can do because no words can explain how much I loved Krista Lakes and her books. Especially how she forms her words. Island Kisses will blow your mind and your expectations.

Excerpt
Gabe faced me, placing his hands on my sides. “This was fun,” he said.

“Yes. So much fun,” I agreed. “Thank you so much for today.”

The streetlights lit up his happy grin. It was infectious when he smiled like that.

“Can I see you again soon?” he asked, his voice cracking slightly at the end.

Are you freaking kidding me? Yes! Of course you can! Call me every day! Let’s go out tomorrow, I thought.

“Yeah, I think that’d be okay,” I said calmly, doing my best to hold back my enthusiasm. Inside, I was doing cartwheels and happy dances.

“Perfect.” He paused for a moment, but didn't move. “Well, have a good night. I’ll see you soon.”

“Goodnight,” I replied. I didn't move either. My heart hammered in my chest and I wondered just how pink my cheeks had to be. I was having a hard time breathing I was so nervous and excited for this moment.

Gabe leaned in. He didn’t kiss my cheek this time, though, he brought his lips straight to mine. A burst of electricity filled the air, exploding all around us. His kiss took my breath away and my knees went weak. I brought my hands to his shoulders and pulled myself closer to him.

I had one hand around the back of his neck and the other on his cheek, feeling his stubble as it grazed my fingertips. Gabe slowly pulled away, looking at me with those beautiful green eyes. Then he kissed me again, this time with even more passion. A soft moan escaped my throat as he pulled my body against his.

Our lips parted and our tongues dashed in and out of each other’s mouths, filling me from head to toe with a tingling sensation. My heart was beating quickly now, filled with eagerness and lust. Every emotion and desire of the evening flowed through me. My hands moved across his face, pulling him as closely as possible. It was like I couldn’t get enough of him. I had spent so much time on bad dates and in bad relationships, and this one kiss was breaking the dam, allowing all of my passion to flow out of me.

I could have kissed him like this for hours. Days. Months. I could have kissed him like this forever and never have grown tired of it. But, we had to come up for air eventually.

Gabe slowly broke our kiss. I was practically panting and beyond turned on.

UPDATE: On My Life (Oh so interesting... NOT.) Pt. 5

I haven't done one of these in a while so let me update you because I have been stressing out for my two jobs, school, and family.

The usual. What's new?

My readers on my blog have been so gracious towards me and so sweet which is why I always like to treat them with something on Facebook. I am about 30 likes away from my second huge goal: 500. FIVE FREAKING HUNDRED PEOPLE have found me.

Are you robots or something? Should I be worried?

No... At least I don't think I should be and maybe I am just psyching myself out.

I love this blog, you readers because you give me something to come home to everyday and just vent and chat about books.

Most recently, I have been reading under developed characters, slow plots, and ridiculously overplayed scenarios which mainly consists of doing the dirty deed. It's hot, don't get me wrong but if I have to read one more sentence with the words 'thrust' or 'moan' in it, I may just go crazy.

Maybe I have mood swings on books and being overly critical. I just cannot deal with this anymore.

Sigh. I need something to spruce up my reading life but doesn't make it veer away to far from what I usually like. My comfort zone is exactly what that is. MINE.

Away from reading, I am starting my junior year in college. Woot, woot! Only two more years in hell. Maybe a few more if I goto graduate school but let's see how we are feeling after these next two years.

Now what has happened that I can share with you without it being to awkward:

1. I met the cutest and smartest boy ever in GA and not going to lie, I regret myself for being to chicken.
2. It's hard to find intelligent human beings to be around. Like you make me want to be more with animals and with the wolves than people sometimes. Like what's up with that?
3. I have a car accident. No injuries, minor scratches to my car: Can't say that about the car that hit me.
4. I have learned that people, no matter how long you have known them can still surprise you.
5. I want to travel abroad to London. Anyone meet me there so I don't feel alone?

Anyways, that said, since I am starting soon: It may or may not swindle on my posts... (insert sad face).

But that's about it.

You guys are awesome readers.

Blog you later.
