When the Bough Breaks (Movie Review)

Literally... That's the blurb that I found for this movie. I am going to say this here and now. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WATCHING THIS MOVIE. 

How it doesn't capture your attention and when it does, it just deflates yet again towards the supposed climax. 

Let's let that sink in.

"A surrogate mom for a couple becomes dangerously obsessed wit the soon-to-be father." WOW. Thank you for telling me the whole movie in one sentence. I really thought this movie would be better but the trailer was the whole movie. The blurb was the whole damn movie. 

Why waste your time when you know what it's about?

Dear Anna,

Please stop being this obsessed and whiny girl who is a vindictive little person.

Why can't you let the happy couple be a happy couple? 

Because you didn't have a happy childhood, right?

"Feel me, John." Like dude, if he wanted to feel you, he would. BUT NO. He has his wife and is damn happy with her until you started wreaking havoc.

Lights Out (Movie Review)

Synopsis: When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought that her childhood fears were behind her. As a young girl growing up, she was never really sure of what was real when the lights went out at night. Now, her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that jeopardized her safety and sanity. Holding a mysterious attachment to their mother (Maria Bello), a supernatural entity has returned with a vengeance to torment the entire family.

Absolutely terrifying and yet all-around thrilling. 

The last time that I watched a horror movie, I yawned and closed my eyes -- Before I knew it, the movie was over. But this was one movie that kept delivering the blows, one after another. I had no break to run off to the bathroom or fall asleep.

Besides, this came out on the birthday and it is so hard to say no to not watch it. 

Lights Out is something that I can watch all over again, know what scary parts there are but still be on the edge of my seat, buried behind my hands, or someone else. Cleverly created, they finally created the movie that was widely anticipated in 2013 with their advertisements. 

Diane is something that I will always fear because dark memories will always reside in peoples' minds. Even the happiest of people can have that one moment. After all, there is no you without me. 

With a good 4.8 out of 5 stars, get ready to hide under your blankets, close your doors, and keep your lights on.

Nerve (Movie Review)

When Nerve begins to take a sinister turn, Vee finds herself in a high-stakes finale that will ultimately determine her entire future.

Emma Roberts and Dave Franco team up to create one of the most hilarious and slightly thrilling movies that I have seen in 2016. The fact that it was based off a book, all the better. 

However, it was a weird ending. That was the only bad thing about it. Because it ended so awkwardly, it ruined the whole movie experience for me but it was hilarious. I ended up laughing about every single thing when it came to this movie. 

Yes it was a book but will I read it after watching the movie? Probably not. The only times I have done that was for Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Me Before You. I just find myself not intrigued enough to read the book. 

Emma Roberts does a fantastic job at creating this shy and timid girl who only watches her friends do everything. But she decides to jump the gun and team up with the daring Dave Franco. 

Oh my lordy, he is just amazing and I want him all to myself. 

The roles that he takes on just makes me love him even more than I knew was possibly. Excuse me while I am fan-girling over him for a while. 

This online game is not only absolutely dangerous because of its anonymity but because of the things that they make you do. They meaning the watchers. 

It makes me wonder if we ever really had a situation such as this if I would be a watcher or a player. With a 2.8 out of 5 stars, I will blog you later, awesome book nerds. 

The Shallows (Movie Review)

Genre: Thriller

Synopsis: Still reeling from the loss of her mother, medical student Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) travels to a secluded beach for some much-needed solace. Despite the danger of surfing alone, Nancy decides to soak up the sun and hit the waves. Suddenly, a great white shark attacks, forcing her to swim to a giant rock for safety. Left injured and stranded 200 yards from shore, the frightened young woman must fight for her life as the deadly predator circles her in its feeding ground.

The Shallows was shot for what it was meant to be. Thrilling and ultimately feed into the fear that people have of sharks. But no big deal. It isn't like there is a 10 foot shark circling the oceans somewhere. Though, I do have to say that this movie included scenes that you didn't need. Like at all. 

I say this because I love Blake Lively but literally panning over her butt several times and her exhale as she goes out to the water is not a necessity. Once, maybe. Three times, overkill. Plus, literally three minutes of characters surfing was cool and all but you could have just panned it down to one minute. 

Which brings me to my next point: This movie was a thriller but it definitely overkilled the suspense as it led up to the dramatic effects. Replay the scenes in different areas, collaborate them together, and boom, you got The Shallows. 

Not saying that I didn't like this movie but it definitely could have included different things. But hey, it wasn't all bad so I do have to say that it was a good 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The Maze Runner (Movie Review)

Synopsis: Thomas (Dylan O'Brien), a teenager, arrives in a glade at the center of a giant labyrinth. Like the other youths dumped there before him, he has no memory of his previous life. Thomas quickly becomes part of the group and soon after demonstrates a unique perspective that scores him a promotion to Runner status -- those who patrol the always-changing maze to find an escape route. Together with Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), the only female, Thomas tries to convince his cohorts that he knows a way out.

With no memories and being thrown into what seems like paradise, The Glades. Filled with greens, greens, and more greens and surrounded by stone walls. Protected and peaceful is what I call it. Other than the things that go bump and crawling in the night. 

Mapping out the area, Thomas tries to work out the labyrinth with allies by his side. 

Though some do not want to leave the safety of the glades and they will do anything and everything to stop anyone from leaving. Even resorting to those Salem witch trials by tying them to a post. Just saying, they don't seem like it is a big deal so maybe not everyone died from the things that go bump in the night. 

The whole concept was messed up and it kind of reminded me of Divergent, double time. Or maybe the other way around. I don't know which one came first. 

En route to escape, the struggle and the will to survive has never been more real. I actually cried when some of the minor characters were gone from the movie because although they were considered minor, I found them rather major to my heart. They took up space and that is definitely not fair at all.. 

So I will rate it a good 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The Purge: Election Year (Movie Review)

As a presidential candidate, Roan is determined to end the yearly tradition of blood lust once and for all. When her opponents hatch a deadly scheme, the senator finds herself trapped on the streets of Washington, D.C., just as the latest Purge gets underway. Now, it's up to Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), her head of security, to keep her alive during the next 12 hours of mayhem.

The third installment to The Purge series and it seems to have reached its downfall. As bloody as ever, this Purge tends to give you some of the most funniest moments throughout with its awful and cheesy jokes. Regardless, with the election running around and we have two different competitors butting at heads about the topic of purging or not too. 

Majority of the country is in favor of the Purge. Apparently, it makes their America great again. But does it though? Statistically speaking, it does lower crime rate, the economic costs of the country, etc, etc. But it means getting rid of those who are not protected. 

The Purge: Election Year really brings to your mind of how lucy some are to be under the protection of shelter, food, water, weapons... While some are just left defenseless. Not saying that there is some deep meaning behind these movies but that is definitely how I see it. 

With killings and twisted sense of humor, this movie was easy on the eyes and ears. So it will be a good 3.6 out of 5 stars. 

In other news, I cannot wait to watch Lights Out.

The Darkness (Movie Review)

Genre: Thriller

Synopsis: Peter Taylor (Kevin Bacon), his wife Bronny and their two children return to Los Angeles after a fun-filled vacation to the Grand Canyon. Strange events soon start to plague the family, including young son Michael's increasingly erratic behavior. The Taylors learn that Michael brought back some mysterious rocks that he discovered inside a cave. Unfortunately, something followed them home as the clan now find themselves in a battle with a supernatural force that preys on their worst fears.

To be honest, I really wasn't feeling this movie. I am usually a horror buff but this did not satisfy my needs at all. I personally think it was because the acting was horrible and the plot line was straight up confusing but I hated every single moment of this movie. 

The Darkness brings horror movie cliches' to life and sometimes they are not even relevant. A review that I read before venturing into the movie myself was that: 

A kitchen-sink horror movie so over-the-top that even the actual kitchen faucet runs mysteriously. - Scott Tobias, Variety

Now personally, this movie did not thrive to the potential that it could have been. This movie family was straight up the worst of the worst. It faces autism, bulimia, alcoholism, and adultery but this evil force brings them all together. Why? I don't know. They were already falling apart before the haunting started. 

This was so god awful that I caught up on some sleep in the movie and woke up with a headache after. It tries to teach you that you should not be afraid of the dark and the things that lurk and it did accomplish that because you were either laughing or straight faced with indifference throughout the entire movie. 

There were no jump scares or scream points and that was what I spent $10 on for a 1.5 out of 5 star movie that was made to be a horror movie.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Movie Review)

Synopsis:

Elizabeth can't stand Darcy, but respects his skills as a zombie killer. Casting aside their personal differences, they unite on the blood-soaked battlefield to save their country.

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen was a fantastic book. I was already in love with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Why? Their romance was so tangible and I loved every single moment within the book. In fact, I lived vicariously through them. 

When this book was released, I was a bit hesitant to read the book... In fact, I didn't even see it in a bookstore until when the announcement for the movie was released. I bought the book, read a few pages in, then decided to watch the movie first. 

Damn. They chose the best people for the cast for this movie. 

Not only were the zombies creepy, it had a crazy storyline throughout. You had to watch the whole thing to understand everything that was going on. Mr. Darcy already had this sulky, bad-boy attitude about him and it made him 100 times better as he started to soften up by slowly falling in love with Elizabeth Bennet. And of course... Visa versa.

A perfect way to have started off Valentine's weekend. 

It wasn't just a regular horror film but it actually made me connect with the characters. It made me tear up and sniffle. It made me laugh. I was feeling so emotional that day... It was a bad situation. But my personal thoughts were that they could have stopped the movie at a certain point but they didn't... They had to continue on and I think I smell a sequel coming out.... STOP IT. Don't do it! You'll ruin the movie!

This is a movie that I would definitely add to my collection and that is exactly what I am going to do as soon as the DVDs are released. Zombies are my morbid fascination of how slow and scary they are. But this movie, it incorporated the crazy ideals of The Walking Dead and World War Z in some aspects. I am going to rate this a solid 4.2 out of 5 stars. Tell me your thoughts?

2015, Jan: Black Ice was one of the most creative books that I have read. Britt, a upcoming senior in high school and her best friend, Korie made plans to go backpacking {not camping}. Before Britt went to go pick up her friend, she went to fill up her gas tank where she runs into a unrolling character that she absolutely despises despite his charms and looks because of how they ended their lives together. He wanted to get back with her but since she didn't, she squirms her way out of his grasp by lying which fate plays a fatefully black knight into her hands. As the friend head out, the weather groomed alongside the bad and as much as Korie loved to compete with Britt, she was growing weary of it. Within four days of their weary struggles: inner, personal, and social, life had the sneaky hand into this play.

I love YA novels. I admit, it was hard to get past the first page but before I knew it, I was on the 163 page of it. Laughing, tearing up, with a hint of a green monster hiding on my shoulders. Fitzpatrick has astonished me with this amazing novel and I believe that everyone should give it a shot.

2016: Jan: I still find this book fairly intriguing. When I first read the book, I never really understood the misogyny within the words of the book and how they pictured every girl in the book very helpless and frail. Dependable on men. It makes me slightly annoyed.

Maybe it is the feminist in me talking but I am just not happy about how she blatantly says that she always depended on men. Her father. Her older brother. Her ex-boyfriend. Now in the hands of a handsome stranger. Literally. That's what she says. 

"...for a minute there, I’d thought I was going to have to save myself. Instead, I’d wandered into the protective care of a sexy older man."

Supposedly to be in love with the handsome stranger that kidnapped her, well why are you thinking about some crazy shite head?

“And then my thoughts went where they always did. To Calvin.” 

Oh dear lord. Please help me now. I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars because the plot was good. The hate towards how Becca painted the women, that's what brought it down.

The Boy (Movie Review)

Synopsis: 

A young American named Greta (Lauren Cohan) takes a job as a nanny for an 8-year-old boy in a remote English village. To her surprise, Greta learns that the child of her new employers is a life-size doll. They care for the doll as if it was human, which helps the couple to cope with the death of their own son 20 years earlier. When Greta violates a list of strict rules, a series of disturbing and inexplicable events bring her worst fears to life, leading her to believe that the doll is alive.

There are two things that I want to point out about this movie. 

1. I absolutely adore Lauren Cohan especially from The Walking Dead because who doesn't like zombie killing machine? 

2. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate dolls. They creep me out with their vacant stares. It's almost like they are staring into your souls. Yeah... Nobody likes that. So when I know someone who loves and collects them, I back away very slowly. 

This movie was a mix of horror and romance. Who doesn't like that combination? Especially in the time of death, love is still in the damn air. Can you blame them? Lauren Cohan is an amazing actress and I don't know what I would do if she just left The Walking Dead. 

However... This movie reminded me a delightful mix of Annabelle and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I can honestly say that I wasn't disappointed in this movie. I was hiding behind my hands most of the time because I ran out of food to munch on when I nervous. I'm a nervous eater... Yikes.

The horrific storyline was fantastically put together from the creepy home to the strange people to the history. I almost wanted to cry and I practically did after watching this movie. I hate driving home alone at night. It truly terrifies me. But what am I going to do? I'm a horror movie buff. 

When the movie first started off, I got the vibe of the classic horror movie... Girl unknowingly goes into bad situation. Bad situation happens. Everyone dies except the girl. Oh yay. BORING. But this movie gave you a major twist in the head that it messed with you psychologically and ended up saving the entire film. Thank God. 

This movie was a solid 4 out of 5 stars but I am still debating whether to add it into my horror movie collection.

I Will Catch You - Kate Squires

You're immediately drawn into the book and this is a book that you cannot put down. I thought that I was going to stop at one of the chapters but I kept flipping through because you just love the strength of Sydney. 

As you read this book, you slightly figure out what the hell is going on in this book but when the words finally tell you what the hell happened, it definitely triggered some of the most emotional feelings ever. Whether you cry easily or not, this book is definitely a must read. Though, I wouldn't recommend reading it before bed because: 
1. You won't be able to put the book down.
2. You will probably cry your eyes out and look like a puff face when you wake up.

Are you kidding me? I can't even rate this book enough because of the fact that Sydney Baxter is one determined chick. She loves to dance and be with friends. There is no stopping this girl from living her life. Except one thing.

When you meet all obstacles, you want to just hug Sydney because of all that she went through. But when I think of the situations, I think of one guy like Thor and the other like some slug man. A guy in the book is utterly despicable and I have too be honest, I loved Sydney and Ryan's relationship. How it progressed and fell. Sydney's utter horror towards him. Her love. Her friendship. There were no bounds to keep them apart from each other. 

Okay? Are you an animal lover because I am! This book centers animals as some of influential characters and strong centers in the books. Especially since some of the characters are veterinarians and damn, that's hot. An animal doctor? I mean, human doctors can be attractive too but whoooooo, how they describe Ryan is hot as hell.

Again, as the synopsis forewarned you all, this book may contain some triggers for people and I woke up with puffy eyes and face after reading this book. Needless to say, my best friend got mad at me for waking her up the next morning and started the conversation out with, 'I cried myself to sleep last night'. She thought something big happened -- Well, scratch that. Something big did happen. I found an author that I know that I can put on my TBR list for all of her books.

Her books contain plot twists and some happy endings but then again, I am only judging off of two books. Let's see where she will take me next. 

I rate this book a solid 4.3 out of 5 stars. STOP MAKING ME CRY, KATE! I don't want to be an emotional wreck, thank you very much.

Krampus (Movie Review)

Damn, I feel like I haven't written a movie review in a really long time. Well here it is tonight in the spirits of Christmas. 

Have you heard of the story Krampus? When the Christmas Spirit is lost, he doesn't allow St. Nick to come to gift the good kids. No... He never gives but he takes. 

Release Date: December 4, 2015

Genre: Thriller/Comedy

Synopsis: 

While the holiday season represents the most magical time of year, ancient European folklore warns of Krampus, a horned beast who punishes naughty children at Christmastime. When dysfunctional family squabbling causes young Max (Emjay Anthony) to lose his festive spirit, it unleashes the wrath of the fearsome demon. As Krampus lays siege to the Engel home, mom (Toni Collette), pop (Adam Scott), sister (Stefania LaVie Owen) and brother must band together to save one another from a monstrous fate.
Okay, so I put comedy because not only was I stressed about some factors, there were some parts that had you going WTF every other moment because I mean there were gremlins running around, there were these cute little gingerbread cookies, the idealogical American family stomping through their siblings home, etc. 

I laughed so many times that I pretty sure that I am either sleep deprived and just really loving this movie. I mean, I cringed at some parts because those little helpers of Krampus were creepy as hell. I mean come on, a satanic ritual with these freaks wearing some sort of a pitchfork symbol on their heads? Like what?

Krampus, himself, was scary as hell. His bland eyes. His disgustingly long tongue. Let's be honest, I freaked out in the movie theatre when we ran into the jack in the box and some freak of a doll-bat hybrid. 

Anyways, I jumped. I laughed. I enjoyed.

This movie was a good 2.8 stars out of 5, not necessarily meaning it was horrible but I wouldn't want it again with those little gremlin freaks running around there and getting in your face. You feel?

Oh and there's this fantastic looking horror movie coming out called The Forest. Based on a true story because it derives from Japan and if you type in Suicide Forest into Google, you're bound to find the story.

Maze Runner: Scorch Trials (Movie Review)

Okay, any excuse to see Dylan O'Brien on screen or in person... I would most definitely use that money. He is just a beautiful man. I mean, look at his face.

He is a definition of perfect. Actor and singer. And he's tall. Tall. Come on now, if you're not in love with him, there is something wrong with you.

Synopsis:

With help from a new ally, the Gladers stage a daring escape into the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with dangerous obstacles and crawling with the virus-infected Cranks. The Gladers only hope may be to find the Right Hand, a group of resistance fighters who can help them battle WCKD.

Again, like I said, Dylan O'Brien is just amazing and he makes the series even better to watch because if you have some eye candy during a dystopian-anything... It just makes it all better especially if he makes you feel safe.  Now personally, he made the movie even better.

I have never watched the first movie... I know judge me now for I have wronged this movie. I now need to read the series and fall in love with the idea that Dylan O'Brien is Thomas.

I loved the thrilling parts where it made me jump and cringe. I definitely was not expecting the freaks of nature that have the same symptoms of a zombie apocalypse. 

Will you please give O'Brien a round of applause? Even if I did not watch the first movie, I felt an immediate connection with the characters, although I was a bit confused at first as to what was going on. But I think i caught on pretty well. Also give a round of applause to Wes Ball, the director. He did such a fantastic job with both movies. 

I rate this movie a good 4.7 stars out of 5. I wish that I could rate it more but it was an interesting ending. Aforementioned, it was almost as if it was Divergent met The Walking Dead. Not like either of those movies or shows were awful but it was an interesting mix. Honestly though, it made me want to read the books.

The Perfect Guy (Movie Review)

Synopsis: With a fulfilling career and a loving relationship, lobbyist Leah Vaughn (Sanaa Lathan) seems to have it all. The resulting breakup leaves Leah heartbroken, until she meets the charming and handsome Carter Duncan (Michael Ealy). Soon, the budding romance turns dangerous as Carter reveals his volatile nature, forcing Leah to turn the tables on the man she thought was Mr. Right.

Okay, let's start off with the fact that Leah Vaughn was in a loving relationship. The beginning of the movie started off well. She was successful and when she goes into that coffee shop, things go downhill really fast especially after her relationship falls apart when she questions her boyfriend as to why he hasn't proposed because she wants to be young and a mother. But he does not want that. Obviously, let's break up because things didn't go your way and you weren't understanding.

You're at a bar, waiting for your friend and friend cancels out of the blue while drunk guy just wants to stick his no-no area into yours.  The guy from the coffee shop that gave you his drink because you guys ordered the same thing, saves your butt from the drunk guy by being very threatening.  Like, whatever man.

Then you ask him to dinner because you're twice in his debt. After a couple months of dating, he meets your parents. He tells you that he loves you. His personality switches, well, like a switch. The slightest things can switch it and a big one of them is getting back with your ex-boyfriend after breaking up with this guy.

This guy is supposedly intelligent and yet, he has no idea that you are prepared to go down fighting. Maybe he's met some resistance before from the ladies but maybe he hasn't. The only part that I thoroughly enjoyed was when the detective was questioning him on several scenes. It is the only part that I found realistic.

Oh yeah, the cat scene where he cat-naps her cat is just stupid. He looks like one of the those villains in superhero movies that always have the swiveling chair, fluffy white cat in their arms, and sits in front of the computer screens. All while petting cat. Like, what? What was the point of taking the cat? If you're going to do something evil or scary. Get rid of it. Don't take it and care for it.

I am a firm believer that there is NO SUCH THING as the perfect guy. He's going to have some part of himself that is going to drive you insane just as it did for Leah. Also, the 'I love you' part was just unrealistic to me because I think that it takes longer than a couple months to know if you love someone.

If I knew this going into the movie, I would not have wasted $8 on it to watch it. I was really looking forward to being thrilled in this movie, for my heart to start beating fast at scenes but nope. I didn't get any of that. I can never watch this movie again and it has no right to be in my movie library.

Obviously, I wasn't very happy with this movie but I will say that I rate this movie a 1.8 out of 5 stars.

Alright, I really do look forward to getting my hands on these books and movies to review them for you. I am looking everywhere for Forever with You - Jennifer L. Armentrout and see if I can find a released book before the published date.
